Navigating ADHD: support and strategies at ADHD Aware
Navigating ADHD: support and strategies at ADHD Aware
Recently, I co-hosted the ADHD Aware monthly drop-in session, where we tackled two important topics:
1. The pre-diagnosis struggle
- Long waiting lists for diagnosis (years, not months!)
- High cost of private diagnosis, leaving many feeling stuck
Despite this, the group’s resourcefulness shone through! We brainstormed a list of tools and strategies to help individuals manage their neurodiversity (ND) in the meantime. It was inspiring to see so much creativity and information shared. So much creativity, flair and information just in one small group!
2. Masking and camouflaging
This emotionally charged topic is painful for many. We explored:
- Experiences of masking pre-diagnosis
- The confusing shift afterwards
The group discussed where masking begins and ends, and how to navigate their authentic selves and feelings.
3. The power of peer support
Everyone agreed that the group discussions and shared experiences were invaluable.
Hats off to ADHD Aware for their ongoing support and resources for the neurodiverse community!
