Our neurodivergent relationship clinic
After over a decade of working with couples affected by neurodivergence (ND), I’ve assembled a dedicated team of therapists to address the growing demand for specialised support.
Our team consists of classically trained couple therapists who understand the impact neurodivergence can have on the couple dynamic.
The foundation of couple work
The couple relationship is a complex system. Our therapists have all undergone extensive training specifically in couple therapy. This specialised field has its own unique body of theory and analysis that explores the origins of attachment, relationship dynamics, and management. Couples therapy requires years of dedicated training, especially when psychosexual aspects of relationships are included.
This foundational understanding of couple dynamics serves as the basis for incorporating knowledge of neurodivergence. This allows us to tailor our approach to the specific needs of the couples who seek our help.
Introducing the neurodivergent lens
Time and again, couples report to us that they’ve consulted with numerous couple therapists, often with limited success. The common thread in these experiences is the lack of understanding of neurodivergence within the therapeutic process. For couples therapy to be effective the relationship needs to be viewed through the ND lens.
The Karen Doherty Coaching Method
To address this, I’ve developed the Karen Doherty Coaching Method. This approach is designed for couples navigating neurodivergence’s complexities in their relationships.
How couples coaching works
Couple Coaching combines education, interpretation, reflection and strategies. Couples report almost immediate improvements because increased awareness of each other calms the couple dynamic and improves the relationship.
- Education as to how ND impacts behaviours and therefore the couple’s communication.
- Education and strategies to help you improve your communication within your couple and achieve a kinder and more compassionate connection.
What you can expect from our couples coaching package
We’ll have an initial consultation. Then six sessions.
Our initial six sessions focus on:
- Communication
- Executive function issues
- Emotional regulation
- Empathy and intimacy
- Social skills
“Couple fit”
What happens after your course
For couples seeking a deeper dive, we offer an optional six-session follow-up. This delves into the complex interplay of psychodynamics, intergenerational patterns, and how neurodivergence has impacted both individual development and the family of origin.
A system built for success
Many couples have benefited from this blended approach, and we’re now working with couples worldwide. Our method is effective because our experienced therapists collaborate with couples to explore their behavioural patterns and then implement changes that benefit each individual, the couple, and their families.
